Adults Age 18-34 Represent 47% of U.S. Visitors to Twitter

A comScore report released yesterday examines U.S. social networking trends for 2010, revealing shifts in the age profiles of Facebook and Twitter users over the last year.

Here are the highlights:

  • Twitter.com saw a 9.4 point gain in the share of 18-34 year olds visiting the site
  • 18-34 year olds now represent nearly 47% of Twitter’s visitors
  • Twitter users under 18 declined 8.0 points to 9.5%
  • Facebook.com visitors ages 35-54 declined 3.6 percentage points to 35.4% in 2010
  • Facebook users 18 and under rose 1.2 points to 11.1%
  • Facebook users age 55 and older  rose 1.9 points to 13.2%

Facebook saw significant gains with the younger set (18 and under) and with older users (55 and up) who are still discovering social networking, while Twitter saw a big percentage increase with young adults ages 18-34.  comScore states that the significant percentage drop in Twitter users under 18 may reflect a “shift among younger Twitter users towards other communication vehicles, including mobile devices and third- party Twitter apps”.
