Twitter Dominates Media Attention Among Social Networks

New data from HighBeam Research reveals that among social networking platforms, Twitter still dominates media mentions.  Out of the eight social networks examined, Twitter earned 55.8% of media mentions in September 2012.

Social Network Media Mentions via HighBeam ResearchFacebook came in second place with 40% of media mentions, followed by a huge gap before third most popular LinkedIn, with just 1.57% of mentions.  Pinterest, Instagram, MySpace, Foursquare and Google+ all received less than 1% of media mentions, although the search for Google+ was performed as “Google Plus” (and therefore may not contain all media mentions).

Why is Twitter mentioned more often than (much larger) Facebook? Does the structure of the platform make it more easily accessible for ‘newsworthy’ social commentary (whether that includes celebrity spats via Twitter or reactions to the 2012 election debates)?
