Mobile Ad Spending Grows 105% in 2013

Mobile ad spending worldwide [eMarketer]In 2014, mobile ad spending will account for nearly one-quarter of total digital ad spending worldwide, according to the latest estimates from eMarketer. Much of this growth is driven by increased mobile ad spending from Facebook and Google.

Mobile ad spending worldwide increased 105% in 2013 to $17.96 billion; in 2014, that number is projected to rise 75.1% to $31.45 billion.

2013 saw an additional $9.2 billion allocated to mobile ad spending; Facebook and Google were responsible for 75% of that number, and together they accounted for more than two-thirds of mobile spending last year.

Mobile was responsible for 23% of Google’s global net ad revenues in 2013; this number will rise to nearly 39% in 2014.

However, it’s Facebook that has the brighter mobile future.  Back in 2011, mobile accounted for just 11% of net ad revenues worldwide. Last year that number rose to 45%; in 2014, it’s predicted to reach a whopping 63% of Facebook’s global digital ad revenues.

Facebook To Earn 3 in 10 Mobile Display Dollars This Year

A new forecast by eMarketer reveals that US mobile advertising spending grew 178% last year to $4.11 billion, and is projected to rise another 77% to $7.29 billion in 2013.

Who are the top players in the mobile advertising space?

Google app logoGoogle is in the lead, earning 93.3% of US net mobile search ad dollars in 2012.  This year, more than half of total US mobile ad revenues will go to Google; this share will grow almost 3 percentage points by 2015.  According to eMarketer, this is a result of Google’s dominance of the mobile search market and a strong showing in mobile display; further growth will come from mobile monetization of YouTube.

Facebook comes in second place; the social network accounted for 9.5% of mobile ad revenues last year, and will rise to 13.2% in 2013.

US Mobile Display Ad RevenueHowever, looking at just the mobile display market, Facebook is in the lead — accounting for nearly 3 in 10 dollars in 2013 (higher-than-expected fourth quarter results led to an upward revision in the forecast).  In terms of mobile display, Google and Pandora come in 2nd and 3rd, with Twitter in a strong fourth place, netting 7.3% of US mobile display ad revenues in 2012.

“So-called native ad formats” – which have helped Facebook and Twitter deliver mobile ad impressions at higher volumes – are a big reason behind their success in mobile display ads, says eMarketer.

Are you surprised that Facebook has jumped into the #1 spot in mobile display advertising?  Or that Twitter made it to fourth place in its first year of mobile advertising?

Mobile To Account for 53% of Twitter’s Ad Revenue in 2013

Twitter Mobile Internet Ad Revenue via eMarketerA revised forecast for advertising spending on Twitter estimates the site will earn close to $1 billion in 2014, according to eMarketer.  This year, Twitter will earn $582.8 million in global ad revenue; a impressive 53% of that will come from mobile advertising.  The estimate shows marked growth in earnings from mobile advertising, which accounted for “virtually no ad revenue” back in 2011.

This year, Twitter will early $308.9 million from mobile ad revenue; that number is higher than Twitter’s total ad earn in 2012 (and more than double the platform’s revenue from mobile ads in 2012).

By 2015, Twitter’s worldwide ad revenue will total $1.33 billion, over 60% of which will come from mobile advertising.

Three factors led eMarketer to make upward revisions for mobile advertising on Twitter:

  • advertisers have shown more interest in spending money on mobile advertisements on Twitter
  • recent audience figures from multiple research sources suggest Twitter’s reach is improving
  • the platform is benefitting from increased focus on mobile by competitors like Google and Facebook; they have also worked to convince advertisers to shift dollars to mobile devices

Mobile advertising will clearly play a significant role in Twitter’s revenue in the future – are you surprised that it already accounts for the majority of ad revenue?
