About Social Media at Work

Social media will change how you do business.

No matter what industry you’re in, no matter what your job function: we think you need to get ready for the biggest transformational-tidal-wave-of-change to hit the economy so far.

It’s about connections between employees, collaboration across a supply chain and empowered customers. It started as a networking tool. Now it’s hitting marketing—how do you get your customers to friend your brand?—so we’ll cover that. A lot.

But that’s just the beginning.

Social media will re-write the rules of business in every industry. Media? I can start my own TV station with Mogulus. Healthcare? Cigna is connecting doctors and patients on Second Life. Government? Barack Obama may be the first President who Tweets. How about manufacturing and collaborative product development, transportation and shared usage of vehicles, micro-finance, or group funding of start-ups?

Social Media at Work will cover all of these, and many more that we can’t yet predict. We will try to be slightly ahead of the center ahead of the curve, to give you a sense of what’s around the corner. Much of our content will be about the media and marketing worlds initially but, as the wave change continues build, we’ll include reports on all aspects of the networked economy.

We started Social Media at Work in the fall of 2008.  We both have day jobs that tend to bleed over into our evening and weekend hours, so we’re not sure how we’re going to work on the Social Media at Work project as frequently as it deserves.  That said, we’re pretty excited about it, so maybe we’ll figure out a way to keep it going.

We’re grateful for any and all suggestions and advice, so let us know how we’re doing and what you’d like to see more of!

In addition to working on Social Media at Work, Tonia is a co-founder and partner in Modern Media, working with established business media companies and with media entrepreneurs and bloggers to build, produce, market and sell business conferences and media brands.  Her background is in media and marketing; before launching Modern Media she was VP Marketing at Ziff Davis and at CMP Media, and worked as AP Marketing of InformationWeek. Tonia graduated from Columbia, and has participated in Executive Education programs at Darden and Columbia’s Business School.

Tonia grew up in Brussels, Belgium where she attended the International School of Brussels.  Her favorite thing about social media has been to re-connect with old friends around the world, and she hopes to visit many of them.  The hardest thing about social media has been to accept that people who knew her “back when” are going to be connected with people who are professional contacts and clients!

Tonia lives in Montauk, NY with her husband Chris (see below) and their dog Milo.

Chris is an antisocial hacker, writer and autodidact.  He grew up in Chevy Chase, Maryland and Westchester, and briefly and ignominiously attended Columbia University, where (thanks be!) he met Tonia (see above.)

Chris runs Navy Road Software, a WordPress development business, and consults with Modern Media as a creative director and copy writer for its clients’ branding campaigns.  Past gigs include wildland firefighter, circus hand, and stay-at-home dad.
