After more than a year of being a fairly active Facebook user, I clicked on a Facebook ad for the first time today. Here’s the ad:
Why did it work?
- People use Facebook to commemorate events (cf walls full of ‘happy birthdays’)
- It’s timely
- It’s designed around ‘sharing’ your thoughts with friends
- It’s highly visible and relevant to ME because of the feed showing which of my friends have given this ‘gift’ and what their comments were
Kudos to The New York Times, which is getting lots of extra visibility and positioning themselves as a media brand that gets it.
