Instagram Reaches 27 Million Registered Users
Instagram announced at SXSW that the iOS photo-sharing service has surpassed 27 million registered users, well above the estimate of 25 million users that had been floating around one week earlier.
Co-founder Kevin Systrom said that of all the users who have been active on Instagram in the last week, 67% of them had used the app the day before. According to Systrom, “It’s Facebook-level engagement that we’re seeing.” (TechCrunch)
Systrom also briefly showed off the company’s upcoming Android app, although he didn’t give a full demo. He told the audience that “In some ways, it’s better than our iOS app. It’s crazy.”
When asked what he believes Instagram’s business model will end up being, Systrom said: “I do believe that Instagram has put a stake in the ground and we’re growing more quickly than anyone. Is there something in there we could do to make it a multi-billion dollar business? I think we can figure out something along the way.”
