63% of Facebook Users Share Product Info on the Social Network With Friends, Family
Those who share product information on social media are most likely to do so on Facebook, according to a recently released study by 8thBridge. The survey asked Facebook users whether they share info about products on social media, and what (if anything) motivates them to do so.
Out of those surveyed, 63% of Facebook users share product info on the social network. This number drops to just 25% for Twitter and 22% for Pinterest (keeping in mind that the respondents were all Facebook users, but not necessarily Twitter or Pinterest users). Many (31%) don’t share product info at all via social channels.
Over two-thirds (70%) of survey respondents would rather hear about a new product from a Facebook friend than from a brand. However, ‘likes’ do not carry the same weight as friend recommendations: 64% said that more Facebook “likes” on a product do not increase the likelihood that they will buy that product.
Many use their social network to help make purchasing decisions — the majority of respondents (57%) have asked their friends on Facebook for advice before purchasing a product.
What motivated respondents to share product info?
- 38% listed their desire to share their personal tastes with their networks
- 35% wanted to share a product or experience that made them happy
- 30% wanted to share a product discount or reward
The results are from an 8thBridge survey of 1,819 U.S. residents between July 9 and July 12, 2012, regarding their Facebook usage and interest in social commerce.
