Instagram Has 90 Million Active Monthly Users
Instagram announced that 90 million people are using the photo-sharing service monthly. And contrary to reports of user numbers in decline, the number of monthly active users has actually seen 10% growth month-over-month in the period from December to January.
Other stats offered by Instagram:
- the service sees 40 million photos per day
- 8,500 likes per second
- 1,000 comments per second
According to AllThingsD, this is the first time that Instagram has released data on monthly active users. Back in September, Instagram passed 100 million registered users (but the number of daily or monthly active users wasn’t broken out separately).
However, Instagram recently found itself in the midst of controversy after changing its terms of service. “Many members of the tech media and photography and artist communities swore off using Instagram going forward, feeling violated by the potential monetization of their personal images,” reported AllThingsD.
While reports soon followed that Instagram’s numbers were down, these were largely referring to daily active users, which can fluctuate wildly on a daily basis. Perhaps in response, Instagram has finally released the “industry-wide metric” of monthly active users – and the numbers show that the service is still growing at a healthy rate.
