Social Networking To Reach Half the UK Population in 2013
A new report from eMarketer estimates that half of the UK population will use social networks in 2013; this will climb to over 55% by 2017. While overall growth in user penetration is starting to slow, certain niche user groups and demographics still have room to grow by a significant margin.
Ages 12-44 have the highest user penetration rates, and this will stay consistent through 2017. However, adults 65+ will exhibit the greatest increases in penetration rates over the next few years. In addition, the number of social networkers ages 0-11 will increase nearly 10% in 2013 alone.
Other key findings from the report:
General
- 71% of UK internet users will access social networks by the end of 2017
- the only age group to not reach 50% penetration by 2017 will be adults 65+
Gender
- while males represent over 50% of all internet users in the UK, females will account for 52.7% of UK social network users in 2013
- nearly 73% of the country’s female internet users—16.9 million—will be active on social media this year
Mobile
- UK social network users who access the networks via mobile devices will increase by half between 2013 and 2017, jumping from 20.8 million to 31.1 million
- mobile social user penetration is highest among 18- to 24-year-olds using a mobile phone
- the sharpest increases in social networking via mobile will come from the youngest and oldest residents; rates will more than triple among users ages 65+ in the next four years
Are you surprised by any of these statistics – especially how rapidly social networking user penetration (and mobile use) will grow among older users in the next few years?
