Pinterest Tops 70 Million Users; 45% of New Users From Outside US
A study released this summer from social media research firm Semiocast revealed that Pinterest has more than 70 million users. In addition, out of the new users that registered in June 2013, 45% were from outside the US.
The study predicted that, at the current rate, users outside the US could outnumber American Pinterest users within 18 months (from the study’s release in July 2013). This shows a significant uptick in international users; in Q2 2012, only one-third of new users were from outside the US.
Semiocast also analyzed a random sample of over 2 million users to examine user activity rates. Turns out users in the US are “far more active” than international users. A whopping 79% of users who pinned, repinned, or liked a pin during June 2013 came from the US (The Next Web).
Pinterest has been back in the news lately after announcing the introduction of ads to the platform, or ‘Promoted Pins.’ To start, Promoted Pins will only show up for users in the US; businesses that want to advertise on the platform can request more information.
How will the introduction of ads affect the growth of Pinterest’s user base — and the loyalty of existing users?
