Mobile messaging service WhatsApp just topped 500 million active users, according to the company’s blog post yesterday. Users are sending 700 million photos and 100 million videos, every single day.
WhatsApp’s growth has been fastest in Brazil, Mexico, India and Russia.
What’s next for WhatsApp? CEO Jan Koum already announced that the company will begin supporting free voice calls in the next few months.
Earlier this month, WhatsApp reported handling 64 billion messages in just 24 hours (but then crashed the next morning for a few hours). The service was acquired by social networking giant Facebook back in February.
