- Whoops, Facebook Just Released an App by Accident – Facebook is working on a new app, Slingshot, that will be a competitor to Snapchat; it was accidentally released last Monday, but then disappeared (Slate)
- Facebook 11.0 for iOS peddles location sharing with nearby friends search and invites – Facebook added some new location sharing features to last week’s iOS 11 update, including a search box and invite button on top of the Nearby Friends screen; Nearby Friends is Facebook’s ambient proximity tool — and competitor to Foursquare’s Swarm (TechCrunch)
- Twitter’s mobile apps now let you embed tweets inside tweets – Twitter mobile users on iOS and Android can now embed tweets that are linked to a tweet; it’s a much cleaner look (embedded tweet vs. ugly link), but it’s unclear whether the feature has been rolled out to all users or is simply being tested (The Next Web)
- LinkedIn upgrades its search engine and ditches an array of open source extensions – last week LinkedIn announced the launch of new search engine infrastructure, called Galene, that will improve search results and problems with maintenance (GigaOM)
YouTube
- Sony bringing YouTube to PlayStation 4 – Sony will launch YouTube on its PlayStation 4 later this year; players will be able to upload and share video captures to their YouTube channels (CNET)
- Instagram expands ads to the UK, Canada, and Australia – Instagram announced plans to expand ads to the UK, Canada and Australia later this year; ads were introduced to the U.S. back in November (BBC)
