Foursquare Tops 15 Million Users
On December 5, Foursquare revealed that the geo-social platform has now topped 15 million users, with half of its users in the U.S. and the other half international. Since this time last year, Foursquare has tripled its user base.
This announcement came on the same day that Facebook‘s acquisition of Gowalla was made official, eliminating another Foursquare competitor from the field. Competitors remaining include Facebook Places, Loopt (5 million users), SCVNGR (2 million users), and MyTown (4.5 million users).
The “lion’s share” of smartphone users still have yet to download Foursquare or another geo-social app to their mobile, leaving a huge opportunity for these platforms to grow in the U.S. and internationally, as reported by Mashable.
Will this be the year that check-ins really catch on? And will apps like Foursquare dominate this market, or will the ease of using Facebook Places (already in the Facebook mobile app) make this the dominant platform for checking in?
